That's it!

Checking thousands of photocopies and all the material supplied on my second course, I thought about writing a summary, briefly mentioning some ideas, which have been influential during my learning of English. But, trying to assimilate more structures and implement the range of expressions required for a C1 student have not been for me, the most exciting. However, not only did I understand its importance, but I’m trying to use it in my exams for UNED.
Fifteen years ago, when I started learning English by going to this LANGUAGE SCHOOL, I was asked about what hobby I had and my first impulse was to answer that I didn’t have time for hobbies; all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The reason was that I associated hobbies with activities like potholing or playing video games, which were not on my list of priorities. However, for a printer who was overworked and underpaid, those lessons with his first English teachers, where I had to express my daily routine or my future goals, were giving me a terrible view of myself. Although, at the same time, gave me hope for change:

I caressed its metallic skin and injected some dense fluids € I knew when we had to play a ballad or a deafening melody € Throughout our concert, we repeated empty words € It wasn’t so clear, who was the craftsman or the instrument € I manipulated its actions while it controlled my wings € Probably, I’ll never fly, but at least, I'm walking for now.

I firmly believe that people need role models or mentors in their careers; teachers that gain respect from students. It is not a secret that every year Emilio gains respect and admiration from his students; above all, between teachers and those who pretend to be. They not only value his profound wisdom, but how he leads or guides pupils to knowledge beyond to pass a multiple choice test.
I’d like to finish this blog, by saying goodbye to all my classmates. Although, before I do so, I’d like to express to my surprise, how much I’ve learnt about all of you; believe me. I wish you success in all walks of life and let me give you a piece of advice: Take it easy and don’t let your goals in life be a simple competition. Hasta siempre.

By the way, which is the “in” colour this summer?

In other words

My purpose with this post is not to summarize the lecture by Richard Harvey; even so, I’d like to share my personal awareness about relationships and their borders.

Recently, it gradually dawned on me that I didn’t know who I am. Obviously, I know that I have two hands with their eight fingers and two thumbs. However, I’m very conscious that I’m changing every day. For example, today I’m growing a beard, but tomorrow, it’s very likely that I’ll shave my head. Joking aside, not only did I fail to understand myself, but also I drowned out my own inner voice.
But as for YOU, I have the perception that YOU are like a strong desire, which I hate and I love at the same time. YOU have isolated your life behind a mask, which provides an easy interaction with other people, although too aseptic to be true or warm. Not only do YOU represent a partner or a friend, but YOU are my eyes and a mirror in which to reflect.
To conclude this sermon, WE have never had it so good and WE are being made conscious that WE need to make this world a better place for everyone. Therefore, I’d like to believe that together WE can substitute all our numerous imperfections with LOVE (I’m being too flower-power) and iron happily that mountain of costumes that WE don’t know where to hide.

By the way, “My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint”.  Erma Bombeck.

A rainbow of food!

I’m conscious that every time I decide to implement a new post with fresh ideas for this blog, I reveal snapshots of a mind at war, through fragments which apparently cover tasks in my learning, but at the same time it gives me the opportunity to express some of my interests.
On this occasion, after my confession about “my love for food, although I don’t like cooking”, I’d like to share a better presentation, which deals with the importance of having a healthy diet, eating more fruit and vegetables every day.
If you are in a hurry, skip the first five minutes.

Living on the fringes of society

Sitting in the ivory tower of our privileged situation, where our worries are about buying a superb car and having a good holiday, there are many citizens, who suffer the greatest violence that this society can inflict upon them: the INVISIBILITY that unfortunately is associated with a shortage of financial resources. Nowadays, we are spectators of a world, where we want to think that only a minority are on the verge of poverty and social exclusion; where drug addiction is only a problem in outlying neighbourhoods; where discrimination against the several differences that enrich this boring society are from the past; where greed is called ambition. However, that world is not a TV programme, but a reality that many charitable organizations, such as Cáritas, the Red Cross or Food Bank are seeing every day.

Row, row, row your boat...

Sometimes memories of the PAST, including the many mistakes we made, are recalled with sorrow more than with anger. At the same time, we look longingly to the FUTURE, pinning all our hopes on some ambitious plans, which encourage us to be involved in a race to reach… who knows what. However, the PRESENT doesn’t seem to exist. Actually, our everyday experiences are considered trivial or even meaningless for ourselves. It's true we are not the kind of people that this society looks at with admiration, although in the light of that issue, we should know that with no more than a few joyful moments, we’ll cross the finishisng line.

:( No doubt, after reading this rambling post, you won’t wish to check this boring blog again. Anyway, if attention is paid to this song/video, you’ll understand these idle reflections better :)

We belong to something new, where there is no place for cruelty.

I’d like to share a newspaper article by Dr Taj Hargey (Director of the Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford), where he explains who are the real heretics and who betray Islam. It has been particularly revealing for me. A must-read!

Ready, aim, fire!

Religious extremism has always been as dangerous as the most powerful weapon: stealing many lives and leaving painful wounds on others. Obviously, I’m talking about holding grudges, but don’t forget that they are only words. Are they important? Of course, they are the cartridge cases of that war in which I stand up for the human race and freedom of speech.
Sincerely, I can’t see any difference nowadays between the main religions and those so called sects. From the moment that they reduce you to being part of a community, you lose your freedom, which is what I believe and practice as my own spiritual faith. I would say that I’m agnostic –again in the middle of the classical black or white. Even though, I recognize the necessity of looking for a place or state where I can calm my soul. Rituals from different religions are often the perfect path to reach the longed-for peace, but freeing them of dogmas, precepts, commandments or fears.
To my mind, we don’t want to believe that we are executioners and victims at the same time. Violence, discrimination, fanaticism… are the truths that we don’t want to see in ourselves. Although, this kind of "social problems" should show us that human beings have been the same for centuries and because of our nature we dominate the earth for good and for bad (along with rats and cockroaches). However, it’s better for us to think that we have the solution; we can change. Will our children change this world? Last Wednesday, while I had lunch with my family and we were watching the News, it sent a shiver down my spine when I felt that my son was as I was at his age and I was watching the same war, the same conflict, the same hatred, the same irrationality between animals. Oh, sorry! We are human…
